Jyoti, a ray of light in the darkness.
Free Night School for Children by students of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College

Our Vision

There are many poor villages surrounding Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC), where the need to earn money has left people uneducated and not receiving the proper sense of education. Even many children under the age of 10 who are working in the nearby canteens or dhaabas have either left studies due to the urge to work for money, an burden forced on them by their financial condition, or yet continue having improper education. These children, children who are the light of future India are buried under the burden of poverty and illiteracy. So how to change this miserable situation going in this particular district, was a demanding question that stroke the minds of our college students.

And so some of the students set out with an aim, a vision, and conducted a survey in the areas surrounding the JGEC campus namely Patkata colony, Dangapara, Sakherpara, Subhasnagar, Sanjoynagar, Danguajhar (10 no. lane), College more... and were shocked to see that of out of the 400 students surveyed, 150 of them were uneducated or in simple words have never seen what a school is!

Hence keeping the above aspect in mind we opened a free night education centre, under a students-run society called "Centre for Social Welfare".
